THEATRE REVIEW YOGA PLAY IS A STAGE ROMP OF FUN

Review of Yoga Play at La Boite Theatre
Directed by Mina Morita
Written by Dipika Guha

The opening night of Yoga Play on Saturday, November 9th, was truly a night of entertaining fun. It was wonderful to be part of an audience united in laughter, responding to the wit and energy of the performance. Writer Dipika Guha, born in India and raised in Russia and the UK, brings a unique perspective to this satirical comedy. With credits like American Gods, Sneaky Pete, and other projects with AMC and Netflix, including Black Monday and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Guha takes us on a wild ride into the Los Angeles headquarters of a yoga-wear company. Her writing is sharp and fast-paced, holding the audience’s attention throughout—a style that I thoroughly enjoyed, along with the well-designed stage sets and lighting that enhanced the experience.

The cast members are perfectly matched, working in seamless sync and wrapping the audience in their lively, fun energy. Veteran actress Andrea Moor shines as Joan, the no-nonsense CEO, bringing perfect timing and precision to her role. Equally captivating, Thomas Larkin portrays an array of quirky characters—from John, the company’s owner, to Alan and Mr. Kapoor—with fantastic comedic flair.

The supporting cast adds further charm to the play: Jemwel Danao as Fred and Nat Jobe as Raj form a hilarious marketing duo, while Camila Ponte Alvarez, who takes on multiple roles, is especially delightful as a yoga teacher, infusing humor into each of her scenes.

Since its 2017 premiere in the United States, Yoga Play has won critical acclaim and delighted audiences with its clever satire. Under the direction of internationally renowned Mina Morita, making her Australian debut, this production resonates with humor and heart. Morita expressed her deep affection for the team and her excitement about bringing Yoga Play to Australian audiences.

If you’re looking for laughter and a break from the daily grind, Yoga Play is the perfect escape. Expect two hours of humor, a satirical take on “downward dog and downward profits,” and the chance to leave the theater feeling lighter.
