The French musical dramedy Emilia Pérez won Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, with director and co-writer Jacques Audiard accepting the award. Earlier, Peter Straughan took Motion Picture Screenplay for Focus Features’ papal drama Conclave.

Another surprise came in the Motion Picture Animation category, with Flow from Sideshow/Janus Films winning over the top-grossing toon of all time in Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot.

“El Mal” from Emilia Pérez — with music & lyrics by Clément Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard — won for Best Song. The award was presented by Elton John and Brandi Carlile, with Sir Elton joking about his recent eyesight problems and saying he was “so pleased to be here with my co-host Rihanna.”

Longtime collaborators Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won a third Globe, Best Score For Challengers.

Jean Smart, star of Max’s Hacks, scored the night’s first TV win, for Female Actor in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy. It’s Smart’s second Golden Globe for the role, which also has earned her three Emmys. Hiroyuki Sanada later nabbed Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Drama
for FX’s Shōgun. He won a pair of Emmys last year for acting and producing the limited series.

Jeremy Allen White also built on his back-to-back Emmys with the Male Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for FX’s The Bear. Later, Colin Farrell won his third career Globe, for his role in Max’s The Penguin.

Jessica Gunning took Female Supporting Actor in a TV series for Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. The award was co-presented by Kathy Bates, who chilling role in 1990’s Misery Gunning has cited as an inspiration for her performance in the series. Tadanobu Asano followed that with a win for Male Supporting Actor on TV for Shōgun, after losing the Emmy to The Morning Show‘s Billy Crudup.

Jodie Foster took home a fifth Globe in her long career for the HBO limited series True Detective: Night Country.

Ali Wong won her second career Golden Globe, this time for Netflix’s Ali Wong: Single Lady.

The Globes certainly is spreading the wealth tonight. We’re past the midpoint of the ceremony, and Emilia Pérez has a leading three awards. Shōgun is the only title with multiple Globe wins. Netflix leads all networks and distributors with five Golden Globes — three for film and two for TV — with the combined HBO/Max and FX next with three each.

Notorious Tom Brady roaster Nikki Glaser is hosting the 82nd annual show from the Beverly Hilton, making history as the first woman to emcee the Globes solo. Spanning 27 film and TV categories, the show is airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
