Veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, Ayan Mukerji’s father, passed away on Friday. He was 83 years old. As per reports on the Times of India, he was unwell for quite some time and while the exact cause of death has not been determined, he likely died of cancer. His funeral will take place in Mumbai today. Upon hearing the tragic news, Kajol was one of the first family members to arrive at Ayan Mukerji’s home.

The actress was seen arriving in a car. She wore a simple white kurta.

For the unversed, Deb Mukherjee was Kajol’s uncle. The veteran actor was the brother of Kajol’s father Shomu Mukherjee. He was Tanuja’s brother-in-law.

Who was Deb Mukherjee?

An eminent part of the influential Mukherjee family, he was the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee. Sashadhar was one of the pioneers of Hindi cinema, starting his career with Bombay Talkies in the 1930s. In 1942, Sashadhar went on to open Filmistan Studio alongside Ashol Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee and Rai Bahadur Chunilal before establishing Filmalaya Studios. Deb Mukherjee’s mother, Satidevi Mukherjee was the sister of Ashok, Anup and Kishore Kumar.

Deb Mukherjee was married twice. Sunita is his daughter from his first marriage. She is married to Ashutosh Gowariker. Deb then married Amrit Mukherjee and had a son, Ayan. On the work front, he acted in several films including Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Abhinetri, Aansoo Ban Gaye Pool and Kaminey.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt who share a close bond with Ayan Mukerji, were in Alibaug to celebrate the actress’ birthday along with Holi. However, upon hearing the sad news of Deb Mukherjee’s passing. They rushed to Ayan’s home.
